Having played a fair amount of this in EA, I must disagree on this point: “(…) such combat systems aren’t quite the draw they used to be — at least not playing the way they do in this version of the game.”

I feel like the tactical, turn-based combat in this is fairly deep, challenging and maybe the single biggest draw of the game. I really liked Disco Elysium as well; I think there is room for a lot of different kinds of RPG experiences. But too many combat-centric RPGs today are Real-Time With Pause (RTWP), and RTWP is just.. sort of inherently flawed. It can never be as satisfying as well executed turn-based tactical combat or well executed real-time, twitch-reflex combat. (Obsidian realized this, at some point, I guess and added a turn-based option to PoE II).

Age of Decadence and now Colony Ship feel to me like a new gold standard in turn-based combat (for modern games, anyway). Maybe try giving it another go with a different build? There are a lot of cool options.
